the 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the chinese lantern festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month and in the ancient times people called night xiao. the 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. so the day is also called yuan xiao festival in china.
according to the chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to
appreciate. at this time, people will try to solve the puzzles on the lanterns and eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) and get all their families united in the joyful atmosphere.
history
until the sui dynasty in the sixth century, emperor yangdi invited envoys from other countries to china to see the colorful lighted lanterns and enjoy the gala(節(jié)日的,慶祝的)performances.
by the beginning of the tang dynasty in the seventh century, the lantern displays would last three days. the emperor also lifted the curfew(宵禁令), allowing the people to enjoy the festive lanterns day and night. it is not difficult to find chinese poems which describe this happy scene.
in the song dynasty, the festival was celebrated for five days and the activities began to spread to many of the big cities in china. colorful glass and even jade were used to make lanterns, with figures from folk tales painted on the lanterns.
however, the largest lantern festival celebration took place in the early part of the 15th century. the festivities continued for ten

My Favourite Festival
There are many traditional festivals in China. My favourite festival is the Spring Festival. It is a very important festival for Chinese. Before the festival, people will go to visit their relatives and friends. They usually have a big dinner together and give best wishes to each other. Most children in China love this festival because they can play fireworks and lucky money from their parents and relatives.
China has many traditional festivals among the year. But I like Mid-Autumn Festival the most. It means harvest, because it is celebrated in the harvest season. And it is the time for famers to express their thanks for harvest. In addtion, it’s the day for reunion. Some people call it Tuanyuanjie. The people work or study far away from home will come back to get-together with their families. They will eat a big meal and mooncake at that time. I hate parting but love reunion. So Mid-Autumn Day is my favorite festival.
My favorite holiday is Christmas. You see Christmas is coming, the streets are so beautiful and so busy!
A Christmas tree is set up at the door of yaoda shopping mall, which is so high! It was three stories high, like a giant dad standing at the door of the shop. It's also handsome, with five ribbons in a circle.
There are hundreds of little Christmas trees nearby. Look, these little Christmas trees are full of ornaments. There are bright snowballs, colorful beads and beautiful presents... But my favorite is Santa Claus, it wore a little red hat, dressed in a red clothes, wearing black belt, held up his hand and smiling, as if to say: "kid, merry Christmas!"
There are plenty of people in the mall. There are uncles, aunts, and children... They're busy with shopping! My mother also bought me a pair of very warm and warm shoes, I like it!
If it hadn't been for Christmas, I'd have a welfare, so I love Christmas.
